Why drive side matters
Floor mats for left-hand drive and right-hand drive vehicles are mirror images of each other, not identical copies.
- The driver's mat has a specific cutout for the accelerator pedal — this is on opposite sides for LHD and RHD.
- The passenger mat often has a raised edge or heel pad on a specific side.
- Rear mats can sometimes be symmetrical, but not always — some vehicles have an asymmetric transmission tunnel.
Ordering the wrong side is the single most common "wrong product" reason on custom mats. Thankfully it's also the easiest to prevent and to fix.
Quick check: which side is your car?
Sit in the driver's seat (the seat with the steering wheel and pedals):
- Steering wheel on the left → LHD (Left-Hand Drive)
- Steering wheel on the right → RHD (Right-Hand Drive)
Where is each type used?
| Region | Typical drive side |
|---|---|
| Continental Europe | LHD |
| United Kingdom, Ireland | RHD |
| USA, Canada, Mexico | LHD |
| Japan, Australia, New Zealand | RHD |
| India, Pakistan, South Africa | RHD |
| Middle East (most), China | LHD |
Imported or converted vehicles
A car imported to a country with the opposite drive side keeps its original steering wheel position unless professionally converted. For example, a Japanese import in the UK is usually RHD, but a Japanese-spec car in Germany would be RHD while everyone else is LHD. Always confirm by sitting in the car.
